The project began as a new garage with an apartment above, on a vacant lot in Silverlake, CA. The client was to build and move into the garage apartment first, and start on the main
house when he had additional funds. As it turned out, he loved living in the 1000 sf space... and after getting married decided to add on rather than move out. The design for the
addition allowed the garage piece to remain intact, and takes advantage of the views to the hills and to the active urban neighborhood fabric. To absorb the outside as living space,
the living room and two adjacent bedrooms were attached to the "garage" kitchen / dining with a glass entry piece, creating a court which flows from the front walkway right through the house.
